Confused about choosing a pair of loupes?

It's difficult to know how to compare and assess the quality of thousands of different manufacturers so here's a brief guide. There are four primary criteria by which you can compare lens optics:

1. Weight

2. Clarity

3. Field of View

4. Depth of Focus

WEIGHT

A Galilean telescope design is smaller and suitable up to 3.3x magnification. Beyond this a heavier prismatic telescope design must be used to prevent image distortion leading to headaches and eye strain. This is why higher magnification loupes are heavier.

CLARITY

The clarity of the lens will determine how much detail you are able to observe. Thinner and more finely polished lenses will have a higher clarity so when you really are stuck looking for an MB2 - you'll have the tools to spot it.

FIELD OF VIEW

This is determined by the width of the optic and how well designed the lens sequence in the telescope is. A wider field of view is much easier to work with as small movements by yourself or the patient will be tolerated.

DEPTH OF FOCUS

The ability for you and your patient to move towards and away from a point of interest is determined by the depth of focus. The greater the depth of focus the greater flexibility you have and the easier the loupes are to use.
